A year and a half ago Amy Bates found herself in a fitness rut.
“I was in the worst shape of my life,” Bates said.
One day, after expressing her dissatisfaction to a
friend, Bates was encouraged to check out Seattle Kettlebell Club
(SKC), which offers 99 classes a week. Bates admits to having her doubts at
first, but she is now on her way to competing in her first kettlebell competition.
Bates understands that the journey to fitness can daunting at first, but she enjoys that the classes at SKC are so small.
“Don’t let the idea of being in a class setting
intimidate you,” Bates said.
Bates admits that she is not a huge fan of exercise,
but the sense of community and the supportive nature of the kettle coaches keep
her coming back to SKC.
“The coaches don’t make classes intimidating, and they
help people overcome their fears,” Bates said.
Being a business consultant, Bates finds herself
traveling to Seoul and the Silicon Valley quite frequently, so to make up for
any lost exercise time, she attends classes at SKC five times a week.
“This has been a big part of my journey to get
mentally and physically healthy,” Bates said.
As far as physical progress goes, Bates says that she does
not focus on the numbers on the scale, but her clothes are not only way looser,
but she can also fit into clothing that she could not before.
When Bates first started training at SKC, she was using 4-kg kettlebells. She just turned 50 and
is now training with 10 and 12-kg kettlebells, and plans to compete in the 2017 Seattle Kettlebell Pro-Am Competition at
the club on December 9th.
“I want to prove to myself that I can be fit after
50,” Bates said.
