Although Hallie Truswell has been a member of Seattle
Kettlebell Club since January, she was no stranger to the fitness world before
she started kettlebell training. Along with 25 years of experience as a coach,
swimmer and triathlete, Truswell has competed in 6 Ironman triathlons (2.4 mi
swim, 112 mi bike, 26.2 run).
Although she is now a regular member of SKC, and plans
on competing in the club’s 2017 Seattle Kettlebell Pro-Am Competition on
December 9, Truswell is still dedicated to Triathlon. She owns the business Zūm Racing, which focuses on individualized training
for triathletes and runners for competition.
Truswell was recommended SKC by Allison Moore, one of
her former training partners and currently one of the trainers at SKC. With her
busy work schedule, Truswell was looking for something new, challenging, and
fun that she could perform in shorter periods of time.
“An hour at SKC leaves me challenged, sweaty and gets
my yeah yeahs out; and I’m beginning to see some muscles I didn’t know I had,”
Trusewell said.
Truswell lives in Columbia City with her husband and 3-year-old
Portuguese Waterdog. She enjoys seeing friends, traveling, and hiking.
“[Washington] is a beautiful state once you get
outside the city,” Truswell said.
Agreeing that newcomers often have misconceptions
about kettlebell training, and a lot of these misconceptions come from the fact
that many people either do not even know how the sport works or how beneficial
this type of training is. “Even my husband doesn’t know how I get a full body
workout with kettlebells,” Truswell said. (Note: she’s working on getting him
into the gym so he can check it out himself.)
Truswell urges people new to the sport to ask questions, not be intimidated, and not to get discouraged. “So much of it is technique; be patient because it will come.”
Not only do the health benefits and gains in strength
keep Truswell motivated, but setting goals to compete also helps her see
progress and results.
“Every time I come in, I’m getting a little stronger,”
Truswell said. “Ultimately, while I always want to do well, I’m competing
against myself.”
Some of the major factors that keep Truswell coming to
SKC are the scene, atmosphere, and sweet Nespresso machine (free!), not to
mention the awesome coaches and hot towels at the end of each workout.
“Everybody is supportive yet competitive,” Truswell said. “It’s laid back yet focused.” “It’s dialed in, challenging and above all else, fun!”
