Fitness Friday: Mother and Son Make Kettlebells Part of Their Early Morning Routine

After recovering from a shoulder injury 2.5 years ago, Lisa Thomas stumbled upon Seattle Kettlebell Club and realized kettlebell training was the full body fitness tool she’d been looking for. Now, she and her 15-year-old son Elek come to SKC four times a week.

“Kettlebells have helped me develop new muscles, and other parts of my back are stronger than they've ever been,” Lisa said.

Both Lisa and Elek started with the KettleFIT classes and agree that the sport side of kettlebells seemed like such a foreign concept to them, but now they’ve both competed multiple times.

“The people are fantastic, and it’s just a welcoming, encouraging environment," Lisa said. "I would never have even thought about competing if a bunch of people weren’t telling me 'you should come to the competitions.'"

Lisa and Elek will both be competing in SKC’s Pro-Am on Dec 1st. Lisa’s goal is to rank CMS (Candidate for Master of Sport) with a 16-kilo 5-minute biathlon (Jerk+Snatch). She also notes that the IKFF competition back in September was a big turning point for her and Elek’s training since that was the last competition where they'd be lifting the same weight.

“I remember when 6-kilos felt hard. Now, I’m trying to finish my set with the 20s,” Elek said. “I’d love to get Rank 1. I think the competitions are just a good environment- a lot of supportive people. It’s a good time.”

Lisa and Elek are among the dedicated members who come to class at 5:15 am.

“The 5 am people at any gym are the best people,” Lisa said. "It’s been so cool to see everyone fold Elek in. No one treats him like he’s a kid. Everybody’s equal at 5:15 am.”

Elek and Lisa both joke about how Elek’s father was skeptical about his teenage son waking up so early to make it to class, but Lisa is proud that he has stuck it, and they both agree that SKC has become too much a part of their routine to lose motivation.

“I always like to get energy out in the morning, so I can focus on school and the rest of my day,” Elek said.

Elek plays ultimate frisbee after school, and he’s hopeful to start wrestling in the Winter, and Lisa works at UW leading the school’s fundraiser campaign.

“It’s just cool that it’s a thing we can do together. Being a teenager, Elek’s got his activities, and his life and his school, and I have my work and my stuff. It’s just cool as your kids become adults to have things that you share with them,” Lisa said.

Lisa also praises kettlebells for being such an accessible exercise.

“Almost any other activity, we found ourselves doing it differently. He can probably run faster than I can, but I can run farther,” Lisa said. “That’s what’s cool about kettlebells is everyone is at different weights and different paces, but you’re all doing it together.”

Although Lisa and Elek have never formally participated in the 21 Day Challenge since they already come 4 times a week, Lisa has done her own version of the challenge’s diet plan.

“I had quite the diet coke habit for a long time," Lisa said. "After giving it up for 21 days, I completely lost my taste for it, and I haven’t had it since, so that was unexpected benefit.”

When asking Lisa and Elek if they had anything to add Lisa said,

“I really give Amber and Nikolai all the credit because they had a vision, and they’ve created exactly their vision- a tight but open and inclusive community. I never would have guessed that kettlebell would be my sport. Our family thinks we're a little nuts, but they're supportive.”

Lisa and Elek are currently on the two-person Kodiak membership. If you have a friend of partner who’d like to join, sign up now. The rates for The Kodiak are going up soon!

10 Best Post-Gym Meals That Won't Betray Your Workout

The last thing you want to hear after crushing 600 calories in 30-minutes of kettlebell class is the annoying reminder "you can't out-train your fork" or my personal least-favorite "abs are made in the kitchen."

You work hard, you need fuel to keep strong and healthy, and no doubt you deserve a good meal.  Now, you can go hog-wild and still put on muscle, but most of us want to get stronger and leaner, too, and can find it challenging to have the patience to go home after a workout and prep vegetables when you're ravenous.

To that end, we polled Seattle Kettlebell Club members for their favorite post-workout restaurant dishes that pack in protein, flavor, nutrients and satisfaction without sabotaging their efforts.

Changes Ahead at SKC for 2017!

We have had an amazing first year at SKC and expect 2017 to be even better; our members are incredible and we are excited about continued development and providing them with what they deserve - the best possible coaching, classes and environment possible.

So, on thing we will be doing in 2017 is phasing out our partnership with ClassPass to ensure that there are enough platforms and instructor attention available for members (PS we are very thankful to have met some awesome people through ClassPass.)

As we continue to grow, we're also preparing to cap our membership at 180 members. This is the maximum number of members we feel we will be able to serve at the highest level in this space.

If you or your friend is on the fence about joining Seattle Kettlebell Club, this is the time! We have several upcoming intro workshops on the calendar and membership rates will be increasing January 1st. (Existing members or new members who sign up in the next few weeks will be grandfathered in at the lower rate for 2017.)

If you have any questions, please contact us, swing by the club or visit our website at www.seattlekettlebellclub.com.

Best regards, SKC

Member Highlight: Cara Ely

Congratulations to Seattle Kettlebell Club member, competitor and new mom Cara Ely!  Baby Maxwell was born Monday, May 9th, 2016, about a week after this interview was recorded (and Cara's last kettlebell workout).

We know it's pretty easy to find reason not to get to the gym or stick with a program, which is why we were so inspired and impressed by Cara's careful dedication to staying fit and healthy through her entire pregnancy; even competing at 7 1/2 months along!

Thank you to this super-woman for sharing her story with us.

Murdock's Testimonial

Many thanks to Debra Murdock for writing the following testimonial for Strikerfit!  Deb, you are an inspiration and we're thankful to know you.

Here she is in the natural state of her 20's
"I started my fitness journey 3 years ago at the age of 33.  I decided for the first time in my life to get serious about my health. I wanted to lose weight and get in 'serious' shape.  I had recently taken a job that required me to be in peak physical shape and I was done feeling like a 'fat person'.

I used Weight Watchers Online to get my diet under control.  I quit smoking, cut down on my alcohol intake and worked out a few times a week.  I lost 30 pounds fairly quickly, but was struggling with getting in shape.  I tried multiple online workouts, joined a gym, and dabbled with CrossFit until I injured myself.  I decided I needed help and found Nikolai with Strikerfit.

The first personal training session kicked my ass in a way that I needed.  For the first time I felt I pushed myself to the limit.  I had lost a lot of weight, but hadn't built strength and endurance.  Over the next 8 weeks I worked with Nikolai twice a week.  Every session I was pushed (by Nikolai) to my limit and was impressed how quickly I saw results both physically and mentally.  Nikolai really helped me feel confident about my abilities and genuinely seemed proud and excited when I would overcome an obstacle or push through that last brutal set.

I am currently on a workout plan that Nikolai designed. It focuses on my current goals of losing those last few stubborn pounds, building strength in my legs, increasing endurance and mastering the extremely fun art of the kettlebell.  I love using kettlebells in my workout! They make me feel like a Gladiator - but mainly because I see results quickly.  There is nothing better than going from feeling fat for most of your life to looking in the mirror and thinking 'Damn I look ripped!'"

Adrian's Journey to Fitness and Active Lifestyle

My Journey to Fitness and Active Lifestyle

by Adrian Cowens

This Journey started with me in the Cardiac Care Unit. I had congestive heart failure, acute hypertension, and kidney failure. My weight had gotten to the point that my body was literally beginning to shut down. This was my epiphany moment that there needed to be drastic changes made if I was going to have the life that I wanted, to enjoy. Once I was stabilized I was released from the hospital and placed on a myriad of hypertension/high blood pressure meds. I was meticulous about seeing the Dr. for follow up visits and taking my medicine and keeping track of my blood pressure. I did this for about a year. I then began to think taking all these maintenance medicines in my mid 30’s does not bode well over the long-term. So though I had contained and stabilized the issue that had hospitalized me, the underlying problem still remained…my weight and activity level. I had not always been out of shape however I was so overweight and out of shape I really didn’t know where to begin - although I knew what had to be done.  I didn’t need to just lose weight; I needed to adopt an activity centered lifestyle.
I started with a change in my diet. I was lucky to live next door to a weekly farmers market and a local butcher. I adopted eating whole, fresh, unprocessed foods with a menu based mainly on proteins and greens. Not only did I enjoy eating this way but after about 6 to 8 weeks with no exercise I lost my first 20lbs! I could feel the internal momentum building and wanted to keep it going. I then noticed there was a gym in my neighborhood in close proximity to my house. I went to Columbia City Fitness Center and asked about a membership. I spoke with Bull Stewart (the gym owner) and he convinced me that this was the next best step for me to take, so I signed a membership. I then had my first initial consultation and orientation with the gym’s Head Trainer and Strikerfit owner Nikolai Puchlov. I told him my weight and activity goals and he wrote up a plan for me to follow. I worked this plan for about 10 months adding it to my healthy eating plan. I lost 90lbs during this period of time.
Although I was being consistent in my eating and my work out plan, I found myself on a plateau. I then decided that perhaps now was the time to add personal training to my active lifestyle pyramid.  Nikolai started working with me doing 30-minute kettlebell training. On day one I didn’t even know what a kettlebell was, lol! The gains in coordination and power that I was noticing even within the first 6 weeks were phenomenal. I wanted to continue on this path and as I would get stronger the challenge would increase in weight, intensity and coordination. I had caught the kettlebell fever!  I have been in this phase of my training for the last 12 months and have lost another 30 pounds (now at 248 pounds) with muscular growth and gains in power and strength that have been amazing and wonderful. What’s more is my blood pressure is contained and I am on minimal medications to maintain it. My doctors said my EKG results read as if I am a complete different person and there is no sign of my congestive heart failure.  In addition, I have become friends with all the Strikerfit staff as they are wonderful, motivated, like-minded and active people. Come down and talk to Nikolai and the Strikerfit team to see how you can accomplish your goals… and thank you for taking the time to read my journey!
